Homemade Butter

Ingredients:
  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • pinch of salt (if you want salted butter)
  • 1 glass jar with tight lid (canning jars work great, also POM iced tea glasses)
Directions:
Pour whipping cream into jar, leaving enough air at the top to shake. Then shake, roll, move jar for 15-45 minutes. First the jar will be lightly coated, but you will be able to see where the cream is not. After about 15-30 minutes it will become so thick you won't be able to see into the jar at all. Then just before it is done you should be able to start seeing into the jar, as the parts separate.
The solid part left is butter, the liquid is buttermilk. Before using butter, make sure you pour and rinse off the butter milk (any left will make the butter taste sour).

To accelerate process: chill jar and whipping cream before starting or use marble inside jar.

Optional: you can color the butter with food coloring, shape it or flavor it. Also the buttermilk can be used in other recipes like cake.
